My name is Rain (I know, how sad that it’s already a soap company) and my journey with our soap is a long and complicated one (Don’t worry, I’ll keep it as short and interesting as possible).
When I was a spritely 12 year old pre-teen. my mom met a great guy, Ricky, who unfortunately suffered from a condition called MCS/IEI.
The condition makes people extremely sensitive to any chemicals and fragrances with a range of painful reactions. This meant that he struggled to find body products he could use, because fragrance-free products are almost impossible to find.
My aunt had conveniently just started making soap in her spare time and said she would design recipes and make soap for him and those around him to use. It quickly became her passion; she’s now making dog soap called Karoovian Pooch inspired by her two schnauzer children.
Everyone fell in love with the soaps, especially me. I used to suffer from terrible acne and got bullied in school as a result. Over the years, I tried everything! I’m sure anyone who has had acne can relate. I tried every face wash and cream, drank lots of water, ate better, and NOTHING worked. Until I started using our rooibos soap and our moisturizer. Unfortunately, we don’t have the moisturizer in
our range at the moment because it contained beeswax and we are very passionate about being a vegan brand, but we are busy looking for a substitute so it will hopefully be back soon!
Now I’m not saying our soap will cure everyone’s acne, because everyone has it for different reasons and has different skin types, but it saved me.
Your skin is the one thing you can’t hide, and believe me, I tried.
Makeup covers it but can’t hide it and it just makes it worse. You become so obsessed with your skin that you forget to live.
My hope is that we can help people to feel so confident and comfortable in their skin that they don’t even think about it.
Because everyone loved the soap so much, Ricky decided to buy the recipes from my aunt and start making them to sell to the public, under the name “Ricky’s Drift“. All of the herbs and natural additives, like the pomegranate seeds and cannabis leaf added to the soap, were grown locally or on the farm itself and the soaps were made in one of the houses that was turned into a makeshift “soap factory”.
A few problems arose being so far from major towns and courier routes and orders became backlogged because of the high demand. On top of that Ricky’s health was deteriorating and he was finding it harder and harder to run the business. Eventually he decided that he couldn’t do it anymore and closed it.
At first when I heard about the business closing I was extremely sad that so many people wouldn’t have access to our products that had made my life so much better. Then, I realized what an amazing opportunity I was faced with. Here was something I was extremely passionate about and all the equipment was already there!
It was exactly what I had been asking for!
So now my partner and I make soap full-time, while he studies nature conservation online.
We still get all of our herbs etc. from Vanwyksdorp, we are just based in Cape Town which makes distribution easier and re-branded as Nature’s Favourite soap.
My hope for the future of the business is that other people who suffer from the same condition as Ricky might stumble across our products and that they might make their lives a little easier. I also hope that we can save some people from going through a skin journey like mine, that they never have to know what hating your own skin feels like.
Your skin should be your best friend, not your enemy!
